a bit of history

Hey James -- found a bit of this wiki's history when going through spammed/blanked pages in order to get rid of them: just have a look :-)

I think you could still view it after deletion, but I'm leaving it undeleted for now, just in case the current software is even less current than we think ;-)

Cheers, Piotr

captcha

Hi James, great job moving and upgrading the wiki! Now we need the captcha system turned on, it seems (see recent changes).

Cheers,

Piotr

  • Re: ConfirmEdit and ReCaptcha: our most recent bots can apparently avoid the former [1]. I'd give the latter a try, because of its (advertised) anti-OCR strength. Piotr 04:06, 16 January 2008 (EST)
  • And one more thing: I'd rather not use it for all essays, cause that may scare people away, and we're not that popular... yet ;-)

Category Tree

Dear Dr Cummings,

My name is Stéphane Thibault, Ph.D. candidate in Religious Studies at the Université du Québec à Montréal (Canada). I'm also a MediaWiki webmaster and when I visited this site, I noticed a few uncategorized categories so I naturally tried to add them to what I though was the root of this website.

I almost immediately received a message from Piotr Banski telling me that the TEI Wiki category was not the root and that he didn't believe there was any need for a such a category. After exchanging a few messages, I showed him that the main reason why I use a root category is that I had feedback from users on one of my sites finding it difficult to navigate properly through a wiki website. Since I already had a root category, I simply added the CategoryTree extension and then went on to also add a " browse " link to the sidebar linking to that root category. You can check out the results here.

I definitely think it improved the website as well as user experience, and at the same time made it so much easier to categorize pages properly. At a glance, I can access the root category and click on the [+] button until I find the most appropriate subcategory for any new article.

Piotr suggested that I bring this up with you, which is the reason why I am writing this message. It is of course only a suggestion but since I sincerely believe that this is a good wiki practice, I'm naturally spreading the word around and will be more than willing to help out should I be of any assistance.

Yours,
