Kathryn Tomasek teaches U.S. History and Digital History at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. She began using transcription and markup conformant to the TEI Guidelines as a way to teach undergraduates the practice of close reading in 2004. Since 2009, she has been exploring best practices for transcription and markup for accounting records. In 2011, she was PI on Encoding Financial Records, which was supported by a Start-Up Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (United States), and during 2016-2016, she is co-PI on MEDEA (Modeling semantically Enhanced Digital Edition of Accounts), which is supported by a Bilateral Digital Humanities award from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Deutsche Forschundsgemeinschaft.
