Discussion
TEI Tite
- survey complete; JU has circulated results to a handful of people
- survey overview
- "Yes" to becoming members if discount on outsourcing
- ~1/2 of the respondents outsource
- ~2/3 of those would change their vendor
- ~40% of respondents were non-members
- unclear who are the keepers of Tite -- only the TEI-C?
- would like to know how this research project can/will evolve into a product people can use
- Tite and Conformance
- In Minneapolis we decided issue of conformance should go out to list for discussion. It hasn't yet.
- MD has had conversation w/ SB, PT and KH to hammer out some of the details of the argument in favor of conformance.
- MD to post to TEILIB-L
BPG Working Group Update
- Wiki contains info about the revision work and list of working group members
- Goal of revision: Address P5 conformance and overall conformance (e.g., remove references to tag abuse), include examples in P5
- Chris Powell for Level 1? MD will verify.
- Syd will serve as ex-officio for the various levels
- Andrew Rouner would like to contribute to level 1
- Ask Julia Flanders for help with level 5
- Need one more call for volunteers to fill in the gap; MD will do
- Helpful examples could also include how P4 was converted to P5
- Unveil a complete draft at Spring 2009 DLF meeting
- Matt will contact Barrie and Peter re: support for meeting space at Spring 2009 DLF (location unknown)
- Possibly present the updated guidelines as part of the Fall 2009 forum (a panel?)
- Future manifestations of the updated Guidelines: print-on-demand (to explore with DLF), TEI-C approval for a presence (and a perhaps prominent presence) on the TEI-C web site ...
- No meeting at DLF for Fall 2008 forum, not prepared
- Schedule regular conference calls; Matt will facilitate these calls
Conference Calls
- Schedule call every two months for WG members
- Assign task per month; Matt will organize
- Use conference call scheduler to help coordinate times
TEI Header, WG Update
- KH and MS held a marathon meeting in June. Description for guiding principals: revise the header to support the ways in which libraries use the TEI; utilize bibliographic control standards; encourage more structured metadata ...
- Melanie added her revision to the wiki a week ago. Kevin will add his revisions.
- Syd has commented on their Header revisions on an email post; Kevin felt many of his questions will be addressed once his revisions are posted
- Major goal: clear up which aspects of the header pointed to source doc versus electronic document.
- Lisa has some comments and will send over email.
- Syd posed a question: "How do librarians encode bibliographic entries." <biblStruct> versus <biblFull> trying to keep in mind interoperability. Worth discussing via the TEI-LIB list. Syd will post.
- Background on the Header section of the GBP document: quite dated, plopped in from draft produced by the 1999 working group work
- RW liked the MARC tags correspondence
- Talked quite a bit about the Header mapping to other standards (MARC and MODs), which is work perhaps beyond the scope of this round of revisions of the BPG, but very relevant to Libraries.
- Approach Header revisions: clean up guidelines, and another permutation can add to the mapping.
- A working group produced a mapping of TEI elements to MARC fields. John Walsh and Natasha led the charge. Spreadsheet with the MARC to TEI mapping.
- Natasha will find out about the most current mapping.
- Missing from Header standard; no way to link to another bibliographic record
- Need a way for <teiHeader> to point to metadata that is elsewhere and to say "I'm a subset of that", or "that's the real source" or maybe "that was derived from me."
- Kevin will also provide a sample header (template)
TEI Members' Meeting in London
- Kevin and Michelle will co-convene
- Michelle will post an announcement to the list to solicit info about attendance and items to discuss
- Natasha, Syd, Kevin and Andrew planning to attend
DLF List
- Dismantle the DLF-TEI list. Need copy of archive. Kevin will handle taking it down. Will work out with Syd to placing the archive somewhere.
BPG and ODD
- Syd to re-post idea to TEILIB-L, specific level 1 to ODD mapping question
- Multiple BPG levels represented as ODD: Define schema for the levels and provide documentation
- Is it possible to write ODDs that describe level 1, or level 3 or 4 usefully?
- Group feels that revision work should happen first, on the wiki, and then consider deriving the ODD from the work
- Syd wouldn't mind doing most of work creating the ODD. Just needs testers to see if it works.
- Syd did an ODD for level 1. It wasn't trivial Took a few hours, day or two at most.
- Writing in an ODD is like writing in TEI. No collaborative editing you get out of a wiki.
- Lisa will test the level 1 ODD
BPG Misc
- BPG should be in TEI as the final form. Periodically we produced versions for static access linked from TEI-C. Track official versions.
- Keep a wiki version for continual editing.
- Not sure of vetting process since the editors are out. Gatekeepers to the web site, Chris Ruotolo/Board (if we foregrounded the BPG in the general guidelines).
- We can post these guidelines under the SIG entry regardless of approval.
Next Meeting
- Tuesday, December 2nd, 1 pm EST.
- Conference call info will circulate after MG confirms with DLF
